

Walnut Bend Elementary's running club is for everyone - students, teachers and even parents! The primary purpose of this club is to motivate members to improve their levels of physical activity through walking or running outdoors. The running club meets on Monday afternoons from 3:00-3:45. After stretching and warming up, the club walks and runs laps at the Paul Revere MS track. We'll even run in light drizzle! All participants must complete a parent permission/release form and a family/student contract.

Each club member is responsible for recording their weekly walking/running mileage at PECLOGIT.ORG. The Log It website helps motivate participants to become, and remain physically active, by allowing you to log your daily physical activity in steps or miles. Members can also participate in a virtual hike across the US with their class, set daily goals, view their own personal log, and compare mileage with others of the same age and gender. Users can log up to 6 days back and enter up to 12.5 miles a day. There are also daily quizzes kids can take. Be honest when you record your miles or steps, and remember, any day you walk or run counts - not just Monday!

For our purposes, approximately 12 minutes of jogging, or 20 minutes of walking wquals one mile, (or 4 laps around the track). If you want to be a little more precise, slow walking = 20-25 minutes/mile, brisk walking = 17=20 minutes, fast walking = 13 -17minutes/mile; jogging = 13-19 minutes/mile, and running = 5 - 9 minutes/mile. If you want to be really exact, you can use a GPS, such as Garmin Forerunner, or a Nike plus kit.

Students and family members will also have an opportunity to purchase club t-shirts. After students have logged 10 miles, club T-shirts may be worn on Mondays. We'll also wear our t-shirts when we participate in other events such as the "Run with the Wolves 5K" in support of Westside HS Athletic Booster Club.
