PTO - What is it?

Walnut Bend Elementary's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is non-profit group comprised of parents, teachers, and staff dedicated to improving the educational experience of all children at Walnut Bend Elementary School . Our goals are to encourage interaction between family and school, serve as a source of support, and work with teachers, staff, and the community at large to improve our children’s educational experience. The PTO works closely with the school administration to meet this goal.

The PTO believes that parent involvement is an essential ingredient to a student’s success. We strongly encourage all parents and faculty to join the PTO. Joining the PTO is a great way for you to show support for your child and to ensure he/she receives the best education possible. There are many ways that you can help. Perhaps what works best is to show your support through contributing the annual family membership fee of $10. Maybe you can dedicate several hours to a special event or fundraiser. The amount of time you spend participating in PTO activities is up to your discretion. The important thing is that you become involved in your child’s educational experience. For a membership form, contact Paige Miller <mailto:sandpmiller@sbcglobal.net> , 2nd Vice President, PTO Membership.

Each year the PTO strives to raise at least $30,000 in funds. While fundraising is not our primary goal, it is an important aspect of the PTO. Money raised by PTO sponsored events help purchase supplemental materials for WB students and teachers. As a direct result of our fundraising efforts, the PTO was able to purchase digital cameras for each grade level (including memory sticks for each teacher), new video camcorders for WBN Kids Network, playground equipment for each classroom, audio equipment for music enrichment, orchestra instruments, the Lippencott letter books for all kindergartners, as well as many library books and resources for all classes. In addition, the PTO purchases the Agenda Books annually for each and every student at Walnut Bend. The fundraisers help us in reaching and maintaining our PTO purpose—to enrich and broaden the education of all WB students.

Board Members

The PTO Executive Board is made up of several parents and teachers who contribute a considerable amount of their time by serving at least one-year, but not more than a two-year term for their standing positions. Potential board members are selected by a nominating committee elected by the current Executive PTO Board. The slated nominees are elected by a majority of PTO members present at the May meeting. There are also several committee heads and volunteers who take on a variety of duties throughout the year that are elected in the May PTO meeting.
