Walnut Bend Library Program

INTERACTIVE AR QUIZ LIST

Through the library and classroom programs, Walnut Bend Elementary School's primary goal is to improve the reading ability and to foster a love of reading in all students so that they become lifelong learners and critical thinkers. Assisted by their teachers, classes visit the library to check out books, have story time and/or brief lessons that pertain to the classroom's current curriculum. Accelerated Reader (AR)
The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program provides teachers and children a fun and exciting way to promote reading at home and in the classroom. The computerized learning information system is designed to help motivate, monitor and manage student reading practice. Library books are specially marked to indicate they are AR books. Students read AR books and take the associated 5,10 or 20 question test to earn points toward milestone incentives for their AR necklaces. Used most simply, AR involves three steps:

  1. The student selects a book
  2. The student reads the book
  3. The student takes a quiz.

Students are given the STAR reading test each 9 week period to determine their reading level and assist in selecting appropriate books. Each student is given an individualized reading program to help them succeed. This enables students and teachers to focus on quality of reading versus quantity as students reach their reading goals.

FEET, BOOKS, EAGLE AWARDS - OH MY!

arawards

As students read books, they recieve points to earn their AR necklace and first foot. Each foot is worth a certain number of points that are made by reading books and taking the corresponding AR quizzes. After earning 3 feet, the next award is a book. To receive the coveted Eagle Award, students must first earn 9 feet and two books.

ACCELERATED READER BOOKS

Students, parents and teachers can now search for books by title, author, reading level and subject by using QuizList Interactive. To search for an AR book, click here.

Name that Book
Name that Book is a contest designed by HISD Library Services to encourage reading among elementary, middle and high school students. At Walnut Bend Elementary, two 6-member teams, kindergarten - 2nd grade and 3rd -5th grade, compete among other HISD elementary schools. Questions include incidents and quotations from the books. The team confers with each other for a set amount of time and the answer is identified with the title of the book by the team captain. The contest cultivates a healthy competition among students and other schools as well as developing a love of reading among participants.

Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA)
The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) reading program was established in 1979 to encourage Texas children to read more books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books. The award process provides librarians, teachers, parents, and writers with insight into young students' reading preferences. It further affords an opportunity to honor and encourage imaginative authors who create books with high appeal to children.
