Our goal is to produce successful, competent students. Regularly assigned homework is desirable in assisting students to achieve satisfactory school progress and develop good study habits. Assignments are an extension of classroom work to provide drill and maintenance – not to introduce new material. If specific assignments are not made by the teacher, standing assignments may include reading library books, newspapers, magazines, or home readers. Reviewing spelling words, handwriting, or math facts with flash cards are also academically constructive activities.
Homework should:
- build upon concepts and skills previously introduced
- require students to apply all kinds of thinking skills, including those at the higher level
- encourage independent learning, responsibility, and self-discipline.
Depending upon the nature and purpose on an assignment, homework may range from ten to fifteen minute reinforcement exercises to long-term projects extending over several weeks. If long-term projects are assigned, it is helpful to break them into short assignments to be checked by the teacher as they go. In this way, students learn how to budget their time to complete a long-term project. The Walnut Bend Agenda Book will be required for all students. The assignment notebook serves as an organizer and an effective communication tool between parents and teacher. Each teacher should systematically assign homework, offer direction, and evaluate student work. All homework should be checked.Suggested time-frames for homework:
